Who am I?
I am a native English speaker who graduated from Heriot-Watt University in 1998, where I studied Languages (Interpretation & Translation) with French and German as my chosen languages.
I speak French, German, Dutch and some Spanish.
I grew up in a small village on the north coast of Northern Ireland. From a very young age I dreamed of broadening my horizons by travelling to new countries, meeting new people and experiencing other cultures. After leaving university I disappeared down the IT rabbit hole, which eventually led me to the Netherlands, where I have been living since October 2000.
I have spent almost 20 years in the B2B/Supply Chain side of IT, supporting middleware business process solutions and delivering projects. In that time, I have provided written and spoken training and support to retailers, banks and logistics companies all over the world and in English, French, German, Dutch and Spanish.
Languages have been my real passion since my very first French lesson at secondary school all those years ago. In that moment, I recognised that language is the gateway to everything we see, hear, read and even feel around us. It allows us to create, to express ourselves and to communicate our needs and desires. I recognised that by learning another language I would be empowering myself to follow my dreams.
Apart from French and German, I have learned Dutch and Spanish since moving to the Netherlands. My Dutch is C2 level. My Spanish is a rusty intermediate level at this point in time, due to lack of practice. I did also take evening classes in Swedish once upon a time.
I specialise in translating texts from the software sphere but have have experience in translating a wide variety of text sorts:
- web sites for sports clubs and trainers,
- legal/financial translations,
- business plans for small businesses,
- articles for creative and promotional material such as texts for guided tours,
- prologues for artists,
- newsletters for estate agents,
- magazine articles on technical subjects such as ventilation unit in commercial vehicles,
- software manuals and knowledge base articles,
- articles on economics and politics
I have a strong belief that all humans are born equal and that everyone has the right to live in freedom, peace and harmony, regardless of gender, colour, religious belief or sexual orientation. I believe that all children should be educated for free. For that reason, I reserve the right to refuse any offer of work which I consider to promote the infringement of the rights of any other individuals or groups to the same right.
